Major Midget Pre-Tryout Conditioning Camp

With Major Midget tryouts not starting until October, the River Rats would like to give all major midget aged players the chance to get the rust off the blades with 3 ice times in late September. These sessions will mainly consist of scrimmages to get back your timing and prepare for the main tryouts. No evaluations will be done at this camp. Pre-registration is required. Fill out the conditioning camp form as well as the tryout registration form and send it along with your payments to the address indicated. Don't delay as limited spots are available.

Smiths Falls Champs

Major Atom River Rats "B" Champs in the Alexandra tournament. It was the last tournament and last day the team would be playing together this season. They went out with a bang and won the "B" championship at the Alexandria one day tournament March 14th. All players showed what they have practice all season on the ice that day. GREAT JOB BOYS!!

Wow, what a funfilled fantastic weekend. The Minor Bantam River Rats went on a road trip to the Richmond Hill Stars tournament in February and brought the championship trophy home on the team bus. The team played 5 games on the weekend winning all 5. Georgetown, Brampton, Richmond Hill and Kingston all went down to defeat at the hands of the determined Rats lineup. In the final, Waterloo Warriors provided the opposition in a very tight game which was still up in the air until an empty net goal sealed the deal for a 3 to 1 River Rats victory. It was a great team effort by all the players and team staff. Thank you to all our sponsors, parents and fans who supported our team.

Working Off The Turkey
Our Major Peewee Rep B team worked extremely hard playing 5 games in over two days to capture the 2009 Smith Falls Holiday Tournament. Going 3 and 0 during round robin play, the Rats played to a 5 – 1 win over Athens in the semi-finals setting up a championship game against Renfrew.

These Rats were hungry and ready to play, rolling to a 10 – 2 win in the finals to capture their 2nd tournament win of the season. Strong team play from all the players was the key to victory, great job and congratulations.

Minor Midget River Rats Take Las Vegas
The Metcalfe-Russell Minor Midget Rep B River Rats looked westward for new challenges this year.  Even though they played up an age group, on November 9, they touched down back at Ottawa International Airport with their prize in coach Rick Lalonde’s carry on luggage – the Midget B championship trophy from the inaugural Canlan Las Vegas Youth Blast tournament held November 5-8.  This was the first time that a local minor hockey team had travelled that far for a tournament.

The victory in the championship game provided sweet revenge to the Rats, who, coming off a grueling travel day across three time zones, lost the Friday opening game. Defenseman Eric Burt was felled by a concussion just prior to leaving for the tournament, but made the trip to cheer his teammates. Teams we played against included the Las Vegas AA Ice Cats, DYHA Firebirds AA and Caledon Major Midget Selects.

In all, the tournament was a great success.  Many of the boys had never flown anywhere before and everyone enjoyed seeing the lights of Vegas between games.
Many thanks go to Head Coach Rick Lalonde, team manager Manon Fortin and transportation captain Karyn Wichers for their hard work in organizing an unforgettable experience for the boys and parents.

Major Peewee’s Start Year Off On Right Foot ahh Skate !!!
The Major Peewee River Rats captured the North Dundas Tournament last month with a strong round robin performance. Playing our 3rd game in a day the Rats were matched up against Kanata for the championship game.

The game went back and forth with strong skating and passing, the score 2 – 2 at the end of regulation. One period of overtime solved nothing. It was during the second overtime period that Shayne Staffen lifted a wrist shot from just inside the blue line over the goalies shoulder to end the game. A well deserved team win.
